Judicial Council to punish judicial officers over controversial Kano Appeal Court judgement

The National Judicial Council (NJC) has vowed to punish judicial officers that were responsible for the controversial Appeal Court judgement on Kano governorship election dispute.

This was revealed during a courtesy visit by NJC officials to Media Trust Limited, headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, according to Daily Trust.

GOOD EVENING NIGERIA recalls that the Appeal Court in Abuja had on November 17, 2023, nullified the election of Kano state governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) and announced his opponent Nasiru Gawuna of the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) as winner.

But in the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Judgement issued four days later, the appellate court reversed itself and declared Mr Yusuf winner of the election in the concluding part of the document.

However, the NJC officials said they have received several petitions on the issue and pledged to study and act on them according to the rules that apply on petitions.

“The petitions that have been written would not be taken immediately, they would have to go through the preliminary complaint assessment, those people would look at it, then send to the plenary, then plenary would look at it and they would set up a committee to look into and the judge and the petitioner would come with their lawyers,” a leader of the delegation told the newspaper.

The NJC official said the judicial regulatory body would investigate the controversy despite the fact that Governor Yusuf had included contradictory CTC of the appellate court judgement as a subject of his appeal at the Supreme Court.
