The Nigerian Bar Association Women Forum (NBAWF) has called for a thorough investigation into allegations of inappropriate behavior involving Senate President Godswill Akpabio and Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, the Chairman of the Senate Committee on Diaspora.

The chairperson of NBAWF, Barr. Huwaila Muhammad Ibrahim made the call during a press briefing on Saturday, stressing that every Nigerian has the right to personal dignity and freedom from molestation, as guaranteed by the Constitution.

While acknowledging that allegations remain allegations until proven, the NBAWF expressed concerns over reports that procedural and technical reasons might prevent the Senate from considering Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan’s initial petition.

It, however, welcomed the submission of a fresh petition, insisting that the claims be fully and transparently investigated.

“Our fear is that failing to investigate this allegation could set a dangerous precedent, affecting how similar cases are handled in the future,” Ibrahim said.

“It is in the interest of both Senator Akpabio and Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan that the matter is investigated and resolved, as it provides an opportunity for Senator Akpabio to clear his name and for Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan to prove her allegations.”

The NBAWF emphasized that the Senate must remain impartial and committed to justice, ensuring that gender-related concerns, particularly sexual harassment, are addressed without bias.

It also announced the establishment of a monitoring committee to track the proceedings and ensure transparency in the investigation.

Calling on the National Assembly’s leadership to take decisive action, the NBAWF reiterated its broader commitment to advocating for female legal practitioners and tackling issues such as gender bias, workplace harassment, and violence against women.

“The Senate must affirm its commitment to a society where families feel safe and confident that molestation of women will not be tolerated,” Ibrahim added.

The allegations, their investigation, and the Senate’s response are expected to generate significant public and political attention in the coming weeks.
