ASUP Suspends Industrial Action, Resumption Scheduled for Monday

Umar Idris Shuaibu, Kano

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has suspended its two-week warning strike, directing its members to resume work on Monday, December 16, 2024. The strike, which began on December 2, 2024, was called to protest the neglect of polytechnic education in Nigeria and other issues.

According to ASUP National President, Shammah Kpanja, the decision to suspend the strike follows a meeting with the Ministry of Labour and Employment. A Memorandum of Understanding was signed, with another meeting scheduled for January 23, 2025, to resolve the dispute.

The union’s National Executive Council will review the situation before the January meeting.

ASUP had declared the strike to serve as a warning and precursor to an indefinite strike, citing the government’s inability to execute nine items in the work plan jointly developed with the union.
