Lack of Vision: A Blind Leader’s Failure to Lead ARTV

Umar Idris Shuaibu – Kano

In the realm of leadership, the qualities that typically stand out are responsibility, credibility, and a willingness to serve subordinates.

However, in a recent turn of events at a state-owned television station, these principles seemed to be overshadowed by questionable decisions made by a visually impaired leader.

Following a meeting aimed at addressing the station’s challenges, the leader, along with his cohorts, made a controversial decision to transfer two key figures from journalists’ unions to other Ministries.

The unions had collectively raised concerns regarding the lack of essential resources, security issues, staff welfare, content quality improvement, and other pressing matters within the station.

Amidst their grievances was a demand for the removal of an administrative officer accused of misconduct and inefficiency. Furthermore, an employee called for the repositioning of a programme manager due to their subpart performance.

One of the noteworthy revelations that emerged was the substantial fund the station received, including significant sums from the United Nations Children’s Fund, Arewa 24 and a business partner named ARIN, totaling over forty million Naira.

Despite the expectations that these funds would be utilized for procuring equipment or executing impactful projects, it was uncovered that a considerable portion was instead distributed among the leader and his Directors.

Adding to the questionable conduct was an incident involving a donation of three hundred cartons of spaghetti by a Kano renown businessman during a fasting period. Shockingly, the leader diverted a significant portion of the donation and sold it to a third party for personal gain.

The unfortunate turn of events underscores the critical role of ethical leadership and accountability in fostering a conducive work environment and ensuring the effective utilization of resources. It serves as a stark reminder that a leader, regardless of their physical abilities, must possess the vision and integrity to steer an organization towards success and uphold the trust placed in them by their constituents.
