World Consumer Rights Day: FCCPC to Establish Complain Desks in 44 LGAs

Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC), is planning to establish Complain Desks in all the 44 Local Governments of Kano State, as part of the Commission’s effort to further protect Nigerian consumers.

Head of FCCPC Kano Office, Alhaji Hassan Abdulhamid Hassan stated this in an interview with ‘Good Evening Nigeria‘.

He said the Commission had already put in place necessary measures towards informing and empowering consumers towards getting value for their money.

As part of the commemoration of the 2024 ‘World Consumer Rights Day‘, Hassan Abdulhamid said that FCCPC is also putting in place interim regulations towards protecting Nigerians from Digital Money Lenders.

“We’re currently in a very difficult situation especially with the issue of food prices nowadays and the fact that money is not easy to get, therefore it is very important that people should know that there is a protector of their rights and whenever they feel shortchanged, they should feel free to contact the Commission for appropriate redress and we are assuring them of that”, he stated.

“We have been above board and we have carved a nitch for ourselves and whenever we have an upsurge of complains, we feel happy because it means that people have confidence in what we are doing through timely and appropriate redress over the years, but we believe that there is still a long way to go and we are making necessary efforts towards addressing challenges confronting consumers in the country”.

According to him, FCCPC is strengthening its market inspection and collaborating with necessary Agencies towards protecting consumers from unwholesome products and services in the country.

“If you have any issue to report, lodge your complains to us through our websites and physically through our Headquarters in Abuja or Zonal Office across the country, for Kano you can reach us at 6th Floor Room 607 Federal Secretariat Kano, Hassan Abdulhamid Hassan stated.

On Digital Money Lenders, the Head FCCPC in Kano added that, the Commission is collaborating with the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and other relevant Government Agencies towards mitigating the problems faced by Nigerian consumers from their activities.

“As you can see we are investigating Digital Money Lenders (DMLs), although it’s not really our field because it’s CBN that should have that space but what has been happening is that consumers are being abused by cajoling them to take loans”.

Abdulhamid Hassan then reiterated the commitment of the Commission towards safeguarding Consumer rights and called for the support of all stakeholders towards actualizing the objectives of FCCPC.
