KEDCO Explains Challenges Crippling Customers Supply

Amidst epileptic power supply and its attendance implication on businesses, the Kano Electricity Distribution Company, (KEDCO) has explained challenges crippling its ability to maintain quality supply across franchise states.

Addressing journalists on Tuesday, KEDCO Managing Director, Abubakar Yusuf attributed the inability to meet customers demands to low generation, vandalism and energy theft.

Explaining the extent of poor energy supply from Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Yusuf worried that KEDCO could only receive 180 MW to customers that required not less than 600 megawatts.

According to KEDCO’s boss, ” for us to meet power supply of our customers across the franchise states of Jigawa, Katsina and Kano, we need 600 megawatts.

“That is what we need for 24-hour electricity supply. But what we have been receiving in the last three months is around 180 mega watt and the reason behind shedding supply to customers”.

Apart from low generation, Yusuf lamented serial cases of attacks on KEDCO transformers and other critical facilities, crippling prompt energy supply. He said six vandals have been arrested and are being prosecuted.

Reacting to the recent fire outbreak at the transmission station at Dan’agundi power station, the KEDCO chief acknowledged the impact of the damage on distribution to customers in some areas of the metropolis who were left in the dark for a few days.

He however maintained that power supply had since been restored to the affected areas after the prompt action of TCN, fixing the damaged transformers.
