Kano: Hisbah Seizes 8,600 Bottles of Beer, Detains 15 Women for Alleged Prostitution

The Kano State Hisbah Board has confiscated at least 8,600 bottles of beer loaded in a van that came from Kaduna en route to Kano state.

The alcoholic drinks were seized last Thursday at Kwanar Dangora village along Kano-Kaduna expressway.

The Officer in charge (OC) of intoxicants at the Hisbah board, Idris Ibrahim told our correspondent that operatives of the command had been tracking the vehicle right from Kaduna until it came into Kano territory.

“We stopped the vehicle at Kwanar Dangora and the driver even attempted to escape but our operatives apprehended him.

“You know it is illegal to sell and drink beer in Kano state. So, we are going to prosecute the driver in court after taking his information,” Mr Ibrahim said.

He said the Hisbah team in charge of intoxicants at the board are waiting for further instructions from the Hisbah management.

Meanwhile, the Hisbah command also arrested 15 young women during operations in different parts of Kano city.

It was learnt that the arrest of the women, who are accused of engaging in prostitution took place in Hotoro Tinshama, Bakin River Verd Sabon Gari, Miyangu road, Hadejia road and old Zoo Road motor park.

In an interview, one of the women, Zulaihat Ibrahim, 19, who claimed to be from Rimin Kebe area of Kano, said she was arrested at Al-Jazeera Hotel.

“I was caught at Al-Jazeera Hotel area. But I didn’t enter the hotel. We usually go there to loiter but I don’t do anything illegal,” she said.

Ms Zulaihat, who said it was her second arrest by Hisbah operatives at the location, added that she smokes only cigarettes.

Another lady, Zahra Mustapha, also 19-years old, said she was nabbed by Hisbah operatives loitering along Daula Hotel road.

Ms Zahra, who also admitted to smoking cigarettes, said it was her second arrest and promised to stop engaging in alleged immorality.

Confirming the arrests, the Deputy Commander-General of Hisbah (DCG), Dr. Mujahid Aminuddeen said some of the suspected prostitutes have been arrested several times and charged to court, but they still continue to ply the illegal trade.

“It is unfortunate the some of these women leave their states and countries and come to Kano where they engage in prostitution and other objectionable behaviour.

“They roam the streets of Kano and do all sort of things. We are calling on members of the public to continue to report such activities so that we can sanitize the state from evil.

“However, some of this girls also need prayers because when you talk with them, you understand that they find themselves in this situation because of hardship,” Dr Aminuddeen said.

He added that a lot of the girls have engaged in dangerous abuse of drugs, which has changed their appearance and affected their mental stability.

“We have to call on parents to pray for their children to be protected from the evils of drug abuse, which leads to other social vices,” the Hisbah DCG said.
