Kwara Gov’t Says 12 Persons Die in Wells, Rivers Over 11 Months

The Kwara State Fire Service has revealed that 12 bodies have been recovered from wells and rivers in the state over the past 11 months, with four of the casualties found in rivers.

GOOD EVENING NIGERIA reports that there have been recurring reports of teenagers and adults drowning in the Kwara metropolis, over the past months.

GOOD EVENING NIGERIA recently reported that a seven-year-old boy identified as Abdul-Hayi was recovered lifeless from a domestic well, after he fell while fetching water in Yaa-Lateef compound, Tinu street, Akerebiata, Ilorin East Local Government Area of the state.

Commenting on the unfortunate development, the Head of the Department of the Kwara State Fire Service, Hassan Hakeem Adekunle, identified carelessness, ignorance, and mental health issues as the main causes to these incidents.

“From January 2023 till date, we have been able to recover 12 people dead from domestic wells and four from the rivers respectively, who jumped inside and drowned,” Adekunle told Daily Trust.

“Through our investigations, we identified three primary causes for these incidents – carelessness, ignorance and mental health issues.

“A significant number of cases involve underage children being sent to fetch water from domestic wells without proper awareness of the associated hazards,” he said.
