Ondo Assembly Suspends Deputy Governor’s Impeachment

The Ondo State House of Assembly has temporarily suspended the impeachment proceedings against Deputy Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.

The decision comes after the state’s Chief Judge, Olusegun Odusola, refused to establish a panel for the impeachment process.

Earlier, the House had declared its intent to proceed with the impeachment process despite a Federal High Court order.

GOOD EVENING NIGERIA reports that according to section 188 of 1999 Nigeria constitution, the Chief Judge of the state must appoint a seven-man panel to investigate the allegations against the Deputy Governor.

However, the Chief Judge cited the court’s order and declined to comply with the directive in a letter dated October 6, 2023, sent to the Speaker of the Assembly, Oladiji Olamide.

The Federal High Court had granted an order, requested by the deputy governor, to pause the impeachment proceedings until the court determines his case against the exercise.

In response to the Chief Judge’s stance, the Assembly’s spokesperson, Olatunji Oshati, confirmed on Friday that the lawmakers would adhere to the court order and cease any further actions related to the impeachment.

This decision underscores the Assembly’s commitment to accountability and oversight, emphasizing that impeachment processes are not solely under the purview of the legislature and can be influenced by judicial interventions.

The allegations against Deputy Governor Aiyedatiwa include abuse of office, financial impropriety, and gross misconduct, all of which he has firmly denied, attributing them to political motivations. Further developments on this matter are expected in due course.
