‘It Hurts Deeply,’ Wizkid Mourns Mother at Wake-Keep Ceremony

Afrobeats sensation, Ayo Balogun, widely known as Wizkid, has opened up about the deep pain he’s experiencing following the loss of his mother, Mrs. Jane Dolapo Balogun.

During his mother’s wake-keep ceremony held on Thursday, Wizkid expressed that the pain he is feeling is profound and the most intense he has ever experienced.

He shared his grief, saying, “The pain is profound. It hurts deeply. The deepest pain I’ve ever felt in my life. I’m lost, but I pray God will comfort every one of us.”

Mrs. Jane Dolapo Balogun passed away on August 18, 2023, in London. Following her passing, a candlelight procession in her honor was conducted on Wednesday, marking Wizkid’s first public appearance after a period of nearly a month during which he grieved his mother’s loss in private.

Wizkid’s early life was marked by his upbringing in a polygamous home in Surulere, Lagos, with a Muslim father and a Christian mother.

His mother, Mrs. Jane Dolapo Balogun, was a pillar of strength and provided unwavering support as her son rose to stardom in the music industry.

In 2014, Wizkid released a song titled ‘Mummy Mi’ as part of his ‘Ayo’ album, dedicating it to mothers worldwide. In the wake-keep ceremony, Wizkid praised his mother for the joy she brought into his life and made a promise to continue honoring her by providing the best things in life.
