Chelsea Eyes Victor Osimhen as Possible January Target

In their quest for a reliable centre-forward, Chelsea is persistent in their pursuit of Napoli striker Victor Osimhen, according to ESPN.

The English Premiership side is a actively monitoring Ivan Toney from Brentford, who is also drawing interest from Arsenal.

Osimhen’s impressive track record as one of Europe’s most promising strikers cannot be denied, with 26 goals in 32 league games last season, contributing to Napoli’s first Serie A title since 1990.

His stellar form has continued this season, with six goals in 10 games.

Napoli values Osimhen at approximately £120 million ($147.7 million), a significant £40 million more than Toney’s estimated worth.

Despite welcoming back Christopher Nkunku, a £52 million summer signing from RB Leipzig, early in the New Year after knee surgery, Chelsea aims to bolster their attacking options.

The intention arises despite their summer spending, which crossed the £1 billion mark under owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.

The pursuit of Osimhen in January remains uncertain, with both Chelsea and Arsenal considering the move.

Real Madrid has also been linked to the player. The final decision may hinge on negotiations with Brentford regarding Toney.

Meanwhile, Napoli’s wish is to retain Osimhen at least until next summer as they strive to secure the 24-year-old with a new contract.

However, discussions have hit roadblocks, initially because of the size of the desired release clause, and later over a TikTok post about Osimhen that Napoli later removed.

Recall that the official Napoli account appeared to mock Osimhen after he missed a penalty in a 0-0 draw against Bologna last month.

The action led to condemnation from the player’s agent, Roberto Calenda, and an official apology from Napoli wad issued.

Osimhen’s current contract extends until June 2025, but any sustained reluctance to sign a new deal could provide hope for interested clubs to potentially acquire him from Napoli in January.
