33 States, 482 MDAs Receive Low Ratings on Transparency and Integrity

A recent report, the Transparency and Integrity Index for 2023, has shown that 482 ministries, departments, and agencies (MDAs) of the Nigerian government received low scores in terms of transparency and integrity.

The Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN), the Nigerian Investment Promotion Commission (NIPC), and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) emerged as the top three organizations in the 2023 Transparency and Integrity Index ranking for MDAs.

The DBN scored 73.26, NIPC scored 63.33, and CBN scored 59.76.

Other government entities that performed well in the rankings include the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission, the Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission, the Nigerian Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, and the National Pension Commission, which were among the top seven agencies.

An analysis of the report also indicated that 33 states scored below 50 on the Transparency and Integrity Index.

Ekiti, Kaduna, and Ondo States secured the top three positions with scores of 68.32, 59.76, and 53.75, respectively.

In contrast, Bayelsa and Akwa Ibom were the lowest-performing states, recording scores of 32.31 and 29.67, respectively.

The Transparency and Integrity Index report was conducted by the Centre for Fiscal Transparency and Integrity Watch in collaboration with the Bureau of Public Service Reforms, with support from the MacArthur Foundation.

During the presentation of the report in Abuja, titled ‘Proactive Disclosure, Access to Information, and Fight Against Corruption in Nigeria,’ the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, highlighted the importance of access to information in empowering citizens to request and obtain government-held information.
