Following the recent postponement of the kickoff for the 2024 Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) season, the inaugural Peace & Unity Cup Pre-season Tournament is scheduled to begin in Kano.
The NPFL had initially announced that the new season would commence on September 9, with the opening match featuring 3SC and Plateau United in Ibadan. However, league organizers confirmed on Wednesday that the season’s start date had been pushed back.
The delay provides NPFL clubs with an opportunity to refine their preparations, and the Unity Cup, commencing this weekend, seems timely.

The organizers have disclosed that six NPFL clubs—Kano Pillars, Niger Tornadoes, Katsina United, Gombe United, El-kanemi Warriors, and Wikki Tourists FC—will participate in the tournament.
The tournament will span one week, culminating in the finals scheduled for September 13 at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kofar Mata, Kano.
Niger Tornadoes and Gombe United have already departed their respective cities for Kano to partake in the tournament, while Katsina United is set to arrive in Kano on Saturday.
The Technical Adviser of Tornadoes, Hamza Abara, welcomed the tournament as he said it would help the clubs to prepare adequately for the new NPFL season.
Niger Tornadoes are drawn against Abia Warriors in their opening match of the 2024 NPFL season.
