Lagos gov submits second list of commissioner nominees to assembly

Lagos State Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has forwarded a second list of cabinet member-nominees to the Lagos State House of Assembly.

This move follows the recent confirmation of 22 nominees and the rejection of 17 out of the initial 39 nominees previously submitted for ratification and confirmation.

Among the rejected nominees was Prof. Akin Abayomi, the former Commissioner for Health in the state, who now appears on the new list.

In response to the submission, Speaker Obasa has tasked the committee responsible for reviewing the previous nominees to handle the evaluation of the new list. The committee, led by Chief Whip Fatai Mojeed, will undertake the screening process for the fresh nominees.

In a statement released by the House’s verified X handle, Speaker Obasa urged the committee to be meticulous and diligent in their assessment, emphasizing the importance of conducting a thorough evaluation.

“Speaker Obasa calls on the committee that handled the previous nominees to take charge on the new list sent by the Governor, @jidesanwoolu and report back to the House by Thursday 7/09/2023.

“Some of the nominees have their documents with you, and you can reach out to the new nominees. I want you to be thorough and do the needful while carrying out this exercise.”- @mudashiru_obasa,” the statement reads.

House adjourns until Thursday, the 7th day of September, 2023.

The rejection of the initial 17 nominees had generated significant attention and discussion among political circles and residents of the state.

The Governance Advisory Council, the highest leadership body of the All Progressives Congress in Lagos, intervened in the matter. They directed Governor Sanwo-Olu and Speaker Obasa to engage in discussions to resolve their differences.

This development unfolded after Speaker Obasa raised concerns on the floor of the House, alleging threats of attack against him and his colleagues.

He cautioned against provocative actions, stating that those who live in glass houses should refrain from casting stones.
