Nigeria’s Super Falcons were the much better side on today in Brisbane but it was England who emerged victorious, sealing their spot in the quarter-finals with a penalty shootout victory of 4-2.

England’s composure during the penalty shootout secured their advancement to the last eight of the tournament.

Nigeria had played a 0-0 draw with England after 120 minutes.

The Super Falcons held the European champions to a goalless draw until 120 minutes after Lauren James got red red-carded for stamping on Alozie.

However, Desire Oparanozie and Michelle Alozie missed their spot-kicks during the penalty shoot-out.

The Lionesses came out tops in Group D while Nigeria’s Super Falcons were second in Group B.

With South Africa, and Nigeria out of the tournament, yesterday and today respectively, Morocco team remain the only Africans still in the competition.

Morocco will play France tomorrow.

The quarter-final stages will take place on Friday and Saturday.
