Sokoto Residents Relieved as Gov’t Clears 4-Year-Old Dump at Kangiwa Square

The people residing around Kangiwa Square in Sokoto metropolis expressed relief on Tuesday as authorities finally evacuated the refuse dump that had been an eyesore in the area for an extended period.

The refuse had accumulated inside the well-known race course, now renamed Kangiwa Square, causing concern among the local residents. According to some of the residents who confided in Daily Trust, the refuse had been piling up since 2019 when certain refuse bunkers were converted into business premises.

Governor Ahmed Aliyu personally visited the site to oversee the evacuation process and was evidently displeased with the state of affairs, describing the situation as embarrassing.

He noted that living waste to accumulate for four years without taking necessary action was tantamount to playing with the lives of the citizenry “because this can trigger an outbreak of communicable diseases that could lead to monumental deaths in our society.”

Earlier, a member of the task force on refuse evacuation, Muhammadu Toro, told the governor that over 200 truckloads of refuse had already left the site.
