JUST IN: Suspended CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele Arrives in Court

Godwin Emefiele, the suspended Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), arrived at the Federal High Court in Lagos this morning to face trial on charges of alleged gun possession.

Recall that shortly after President Bola Tinubu suspended Emefiele, he was arrested and detained by the Department of State Services (DSS) on June 15, on a two-count charge that accuses him of unlawfully possessing a single-barrel shotgun (JOJEFF MAGNUM 8371) without a valid license.

According to the prosecution, which is spearheaded by the Federal Government and DSS, Emefiele is accused of violating Section 4 of the Firearms Act, 2004, which prohibits the possession of firearms without the appropriate license.

The charge falls under Section 27 (1b) of the same Act, outlining the punishment for such offenses.

The second count against the suspended CBN Governor alleges that he was found in possession of 123 rounds of live ammunition (Cartridges) without a valid license.

This act is said to contravene Section 8 of the Firearms Act, 2004, and is punishable under Section 27 (1)(b)(il) of the same Act.

Emefiele’s legal team had already arrived at the court premises earlier, making preparations for the trial proceedings.
