Borno Records 274 New Cholera Cases in 24 Hours — Deaths Hit 4,204

— Dele Akinola 3 min read

Borno State recorded 274 new cholera cases within 24 hours, pushing the total number of infections to 4,204 as the outbreak overwhelms local health facilities and strains an already fragile population, Vanguard News reported on Monday.

The surge comes as authorities in the northeastern state battle to contain the waterborne disease that has devastated communities already displaced by over a decade of insurgency. Health workers at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital confirmed they are treating patients in temporary overflow tents as wards reach capacity.

Scale of the Outbreak

Health officials in Borno have recorded the sharpest single-day increase since the outbreak began. The state Ministry of Health confirmed 4,204 cumulative cases as of Sunday, with testing labs in Maiduguri struggling to process samples fast enough to keep pace with new arrivals.

Maiduguri, the state capital, accounts for the largest share of infections. Treatment centres set up by UNICEF at the Dalori and Bakassi IDP camps have reported occupancy rates above 90 percent, according to local health workers who spoke to Vanguard News on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to brief the press.

Why the Outbreak Is Spreading

Contaminated water from shallow wells has become the primary transmission route. In areas surrounding Maiduguri, tens of thousands of internally displaced persons rely on untreated water sources after boreholes were destroyed during conflict. Heavy seasonal rains have worsened conditions, flooding latrines and washing faecal matter into open drinking water supplies.

The World Health Organisation warned in August that northeastern Nigeria faced a high risk of cholera spread due to limited access to clean water and poor sanitation infrastructure. That warning has materialised faster than many anticipated.

Government Response

The Borno State Government has activated an emergency operations centre and deployed oral rehydration salts and chlorine tablets to affected communities. Governor Babagana Zulum held an emergency meeting with health commissioners on Saturday and ordered the establishment of additional oral rehydration points in Jere, Konduga, and Mafa local government areas.

However, aid workers from several international NGOs say supply deliveries have been disrupted by access restrictions. Some roads leading to remote settlements remain impassable, forcing teams to transport medicine on foot. The National Primary Health Care Development Agency has promised to send a Rapid Response Team, though the deployment had not begun as of Monday.

International Support Arrives

UNICEF shipped 150,000 water purification tablets to Borno last week. The Nigerian Red Cross dispatched 200 volunteers to conduct house-to-house awareness campaigns in the worst-hit neighbourhoods. These efforts complement work already underway by MSF, which runs the primary cholera treatment unit at Gwange.

Living With the Crisis

For families in Maiduguri's informal settlements, the outbreak adds another layer to years of hardship. Many cannot afford transport to treatment centres and must walk for hours with sick children. Community leaders in Yerwa ward told Vanguard News that at least 12 deaths occurred at home before patients could reach a clinic.

Food vendors near the Maiduguri main market said business had slowed as residents avoid leaving home. "We are scared," said Fatima Abubakar, a mother of three. "Every family has someone sick. We don't have money for medicine."

What Happens Next

Health experts say the rainy season will last at least another six weeks, meaning conditions for contamination will persist. The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has placed three states, including Borno, on heightened alert and is expected to release updated case figures by Thursday.

Without urgent action to repair destroyed water infrastructure and enforce sanitation rules at camps, the death toll is likely to climb further. International donors have been asked to fund an emergency sanitation programme, but no funding commitments had been confirmed as of publication.
