Born on January 15, 1978, in Bunkure, Kano State, Dr. Mahmoud’s academic journey reflects her passion for excellence. She attended Bunkure Primary School and Government Girls Science Secondary School, Garko, before proceeding to the College of Art and Remedial Studies, Kano, for her IJMB. She later earned a medical degree from Bayero University Kano in 2005 and completed her residency at Aminu Kano Teaching Hospital, becoming a consultant family physician and a member of the West African College of Physicians.
Her leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic as Commissioner for Higher Education showcases her ability to handle crises and implement impactful policies. She plays a crucial role in ensuring state-owned tertiary institutions resume academic activities promptly, mitigating disruptions caused by the pandemic.
Beyond governance, Dr. Mahmoud is an active political figure. She is a member of the Kano State Presidential and Gubernatorial Campaign Council (2022/23) and chairs the Welfare Subcommittee of the Women’s Wing. Additionally, she is instrumental in the establishment of the College of Health Sciences at Aliko Dangote University of Science and Technology, Wudil, and contributes to various state committees on education, drug abuse prevention, and public health.
Her professional affiliations include the Society for Family Physicians of Nigeria (SOFPON), the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), the Association of Resident Doctors (ARD), and the Medical Women’s Association of Nigeria (MWAN), where she previously served as treasurer.
