The Gombe State Executive Council, presided over by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, CON, has approved N580.8 million for the payment of registration fees for over 20,000 students sitting for various Senior School Certificate Examinations (SSCE) in 2025.
The announcement was made by the Commissioner of Information, Culture, and Ethical Orientation, Hon. Mijinyawa Ardo Tilde, during a press briefing following the 45th Executive Council meeting.
Providing further details, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Aishatu Umar Maigari, stated that the Gombe State Government has consistently funded SSCE registration since 2019 to ease the financial burden on parents and ensure that indigent students complete their secondary education without obstacles.
“Today, the council approved the payment of SSCE registration fees for 20,477 students across the state. This includes 18,723 indigent students for WAEC, 110 students under the Exchange Programme, 58 students from Special Schools, 1,368 students for NABTEB, and 219 students from Arabic colleges for NBAIS,” Prof. Maigari explained.

She further noted that the total amount approved—₦580,870,900—will be jointly funded by the state and local governments.
“The payment of SSCE fees has been an annual practice of this administration since 2019. It is aimed at alleviating the financial burden on parents and ensuring that students across the state have the opportunity to complete their secondary education,” she added.
Prof. Maigari highlighted the significant impact of the initiative, stating that before Governor Inuwa’s administration, only 23% of students who sat for SSCE exams obtained five credits, including English and Mathematics. However, with ongoing educational reforms and the government’s continued commitment to funding SSCE registration, the pass rate has increased to about 70%.
