Kano State Deputy Governor, Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, has urged heads of state-owned tertiary institutions to reassess their benchmarks for academic excellence to ensure they can compete with global standards.
Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, who also serves as the Honourable Commissioner for the Ministry of Higher Education, issued this challenge during a special meeting with heads of state-owned tertiary institutions, the Executive Secretary of the Scholarship Board, senior management of the ministry and some stakeholders, on Tuesday.
“Our universities and colleges have reached a stage where they must compete with renowned international institutions, not just their local counterparts,” he stated.

The Commissioner emphasized the state government’s commitment to revitalizing the education sector, highlighting the critical role education plays in nation-building. He urged institutional leaders to collaborate and address the challenges facing the society.
He further reaffirmed Governor Abba Yusuf’s dedication to sustaining both foreign and local scholarship programs for Kano’s indigenous students, aimed at grooming future leaders, called on the all stakeholders to put hands on deck to develop the State to the greater heights.
“I am ready to take on any task necessary to achieve success in the education sector. Institutions of higher learning are the beacon of Kano State, and I pledge continued support in every possible way,” he added.
Earlier, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry for Higher Education, Dr. Hadi Bala Yahaya, MNI, welcomed the Commissioner and described the meeting as a valuable platform to brief him on the achievements and challenges of the institutions.
In response, the heads of the institutions assured their unwavering loyalty, dedication, and commitment to supporting the Commissioner’s vision for advancing higher education in the state.
The meeting concluded with presentations of reports from some institution, including the Kano State Scholarship Board.
