HOW KANO IS RELEGATED BY KWANKWASIYA DEMOLITION POLICY

By Mustapha Kangiwa

Analysts’ Data Services and Resources (ADSR) is an independent Data and Research Organization that provides accurate data, information and analysis for intelligent investment, academic and policy decisions. In their recent publication titled “Socio-economic Scorecard of Nigerian State” 2023 Baseline, they ranked Kano State 5th position.

The analysis was based on the performance of the previous administrations in order to ascertain the stage of which the new administration took over the affairs of the state. It was made to guide the new administrations across Nigeria on where to improve and make progress on what they have found on ground when they assume office. It also provides a yardstick for measurement of the performance during and after the tenure of the new administration.

There are 12 major indicators and segments of progress in the analysis. The 36 states and FCT has particular areas where they scored higher and the areas they scored low and finally the overall score was calculated to determine overall position of each state. Interestingly Kano ranks 5th, having an overall score of 52.65%, which is higher than the average score of 45.65% for all states.

The strongest segment in Kano is Land, Housing and Sanitation where it ranks 1st.The state also scores higher than average in Capital Importation, Financial Sector, Economic Output, Energy and Environment, ICT infrastructure, transportation, and Industrialisation and Business Competitiveness.

Unfortunately, this tremendous achievement that should have made all the people of Kano proud ended up being obstructed, halted and destroyed by the present administration of NNPP-Kwankwasiya. Instead of them to maintain and improve on these areas where Kano state performed wonderfully, NNPP government first official assignment was to destroy all that were achieved and took the state backward.

The very area of which Kano state ranked 1st in the whole country was Land and Housing and NNPP’s top priority is demolition of business buildings and housing across the state capital. They demolished and destroyed properties estimated to be worth 300 Billion Naira within a very short period of time. As a result, more than a 100 thousands people lost their jobs. Business men turned to beggers and score of people lost their lives.

It should be noted that, the demolished structures are legally owned by individual business men and women who have been in business sector for many years and have been working very hard to make their legitimate earnings. They acquired the lands through legal means and had followed all the guidelines and standard set by the appropriate authorities. Sadly, these individuals who provides jobs for over a 100 thousands people found themselves losing almost all they have worked for many years in one day.

Moreover, by implication, the state is relegated by the NNPP in all the other areas it has performed well. The state performance in capital importation, financial sector, business competitiveness and so on must have been lowered drastically by this senseless policy of demolitions and destruction of people’s property.

However, the recent court judgment that ordered the NNPP government to pay the some 30 Billion Naira to the owners of the demolished structure in Eid Mosque is not just an apparent confirmation of the illegallity of the government action but also an indication that the prayers of the oppressed people has been answered. As they stated during an interview in one of the Radio station, the leadership of the victims of this injustice, they will continue to pray and fight for justice.
