As tensions escalate in the aftermath of the coup in Niger Republic, the Economic Community Of West Africa States (ECOWAS) has imposed additional sanctions on the individuals and entities associated with the military junta.

Recall that the regional bloc had previously issued an ultimatum to the Niger junta, demanding the reinstatement of President Mohamed Bazoum within seven days or face a range of sanctions, potentially including military intervention.

Defying ECOWAS’ warnings, the coupists stood firm, rejecting any foreign interference and cutting diplomatic ties with Nigeria, Togo, France, and the United States. In a further show of strength, the junta also decided to indefinitely close Nigerien airspace.

As the ultimatum’s expiration date approached, ECOWAS scheduled a meeting for Thursday to assess the ongoing situation in Niger.

In a press briefing on Tuesday, Presidential spokesman Ajuri Ngeale confirmed that ECOWAS has now implemented additional sanctions, targeting individuals and entities linked to the military junta.

While Ngeale did not provide specific details, he indicated that the sanctions had been enacted through the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
