On Thursday, protests broke out at the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) secretariat in Port Harcourt ahead of the local government election scheduled for October 5, 2024.
Large crowds of protesters gathered at the scene, prompting a heavy security presence. The demonstration led to slow movement of vehicles around the area, as security officers worked to control the crowd.
The protest coincides with an ongoing issue involving the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).
According to INEC’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Johnson Alalibo, the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) has yet to receive the 2023 Voter Register needed for the election.
Alalibo explained that while RSIEC had requested the Register, it has not been released due to administrative reasons and a court ruling from Abuja that bars the Commission from providing it.
The situation has raised concerns about the readiness for the upcoming election, as tensions continue to rise in the lead-up to the vote.
