Academic Staff Union Chairman of FCAPT Words Threat to National Security, Academic Development – Report

Umar Idris Shuaibu, Kano

Federal College of Agricultural Produce Technology as a tertiary institution of higher learning in Hotoro Kano State has excelled in training students in Agric-related fields and science courses.

However, running an institution like FCAPT with such a mandate requires knowledgeable people with expertise and track records in academic excellence and administration.

In 2020, the college witnessed a memorable occasion after the appointment of Dr. Muhammad Yusha’u Gwaram as the institution’s Provost, to spearhead its activities for five years.

It is in history that FCAPT records many developmental projects and academic excellence considering the success and capacity of graduating students.

This is attained under the leadership of Dr. Muhammad Yusha’u Gwaram who has a keen interest in agriculture and training people in the field for them to be self-reliant.

But the bad elements of under the umbrella of unionism are dragging the effort of the good Samaritan who many relied on.

Unionism is nothing but protecting and furthering the rights of workers, but to the dismay of all academics and students in the institution, the union chairman is sabotaging the efforts of the Management for his gain.

In a radio clip of some media stations in Kano, the chairman Abubakar Mohd Bello, made some allegations with an intention to defame the good characters and the stakeholders from the supervising agency.

The so-called union chairman Abubakar Mohd Bello who is not a financial member of the academic staff association, because he is not remitting a penny to the development of union alleged that the college Management is reluctant and not pursuing the rights of the academic staff, which to his knowledge efforts are underway to facilitate greater things in the college.

Under Gwaram’s leadership, a lot of staff welfare packages are been introduced and given priority to motivate the working staff to deliver on the mandate of the college.

Stakeholders who sighted some documents and memos meant for collaboration and linkages narrate that the college has never had a workaholic Provost like Gwaram.

“Gwaram is passionate about the job, and this is exactly a leader that we’re willing to work with because he borrow a leaf from our Executive Secretary Prof. Garba Hamidu Sharubutu. On the issue of staff welfare packages Gwaram is always up and doing especially with regards to our promotion, peculiar allowance that was introduced recently to cushion the effect of inflation, and arrears among others.

“You see all his allegations are misleading, false, and lack the needed facts.

Our Provost wrote a letter to the Agricultural Research Council of Nigeria (ARCN), notifying them about the retirement of the college Registrar Malam Muhammad Sani Haruna some months back, he retired exactly on 12 September, and the memo was sent to the Council on 13th for the necessary action.

What the union chairman doesn’t know, it is only the Council that has the power to appoint somebody in that strategic position, not the Provost.

On the issue of our arrears, Dr. Yusha’u Gwaram made some effort to write a letter to the Council to clear the six-year arrears to all of our members of staff.

As a Provost, he always seeks the consent, permission, and approval before executing anything in the college”, Anonymous source.

Report says that the FCAPT under the able leadership of Dr. Muhammad Yusha’u Gwaram, FCAPT trains youths on the utilization of orange-fleshed sweet potatoes, empowers women on fruit juice production and post-harvest storage techniques, and trains farmers on financial cycles totaling 3,000 beneficiaries in northern Nigeria, across the value chains.

The college was established in 2008 to train middle-level manpower in agriculture, post-harvest technology, and agricultural produce inspection.
