The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has officially inaugurated its new executives for the Kano State chapter, set to lead the union for the next three years.

The ceremony, held in Kano, highlighted the union’s commitment to promoting professionalism and protecting the interests of journalists across the state.

In his address, the National Vice Chairman Muhammad Tukur Umar, urged the newly appointed leaders to follow in the footsteps of their predecessors, emphasizing the importance of serving the people. “You should promote professionalism and protect the interest of your members wherever they are,” he said, outlining the responsibilities that lie ahead for the new executives.

The outgoing Chairman, Comrade Abbas Ibrahim, reflected on the challenges faced during his tenure, which began in 2018.

“When we came in, the headquarter was in bad shape. We thank Governor Abba for appointing one of our own,” he said. He acknowledged the difficulties encountered, particularly in accessing information, which he described as “our raw material for production,” and called on both public and private sectors to facilitate easier access.

Under the Chairmanship of Abbas Ibrahim, the union successfully settled all outstanding liabilities and left the NUJ account with a balance of 819,597 Naira.

He expressed gratitude for the opportunity to serve and wished the new executives well.

Suleiman Dederi, the newly appointed Chairman of the NUJ Kano Council, vowed to uphold the ethics of journalism and serve with integrity. “I promise to serve with integrity and uphold the ethics,” Dederi stated, signaling a commitment to maintaining high standards in journalism.

Comrade Kabiru Ado Minjibir, Vice President of the Nigerian Labour Congress, encouraged the State Government to strengthen its relationship with Journalists, recognizing the pivotal role they play in society.

The inauguration ceremony also featured the oath-taking administered by Abdulrazak Bello Kaura, the Zonal Secretary of the NUJ.

The newly appointed executives include Suleiman Dederi as Chairman, Mustapha Gambo as Vice Chairman, Abubakar Shehu Kwaru as Secretary, Hauwa Zahraddeen as Assistant Secretary, Nura Bala Ajingi as Treasurer, and Sidi Ali as Financial Secretary.

The NUJ Kano chapter now looks forward to a promising future under its new leadership, with a focus on advancing journalism and enhancing the welfare of its members in the state.
