Veteran Nollywood comic actor, John Okafor, popularly known by his stage name Mr Ibu, has passed away at the age of 62, according to a statement from the Actors Guild of Nigeria (AGN).
Mr Ibu reportedly died on Saturday, March 2, 2024, in a Lagos hospital after suffering a cardiac arrest, according to his manager of 24 years, Mr Don Single Nwuzor.
The news was confirmed by AGN president Emeka Rollas in a statement expressing grief over the actor’s death.
“Kate Henshaw lost her mother earlier today and Mr Ibu suffered cardiac arrest according to his manager for 24 years Mr Don Single Nwuzor. I announce with deep sense of grief that Mr Ibu didn’t make it. May his soul rest in peace,” Rollas wrote.
Mr Ibu had recently undergone a series of surgeries that resulted in the amputation of one of his legs.
He had solicited prayers and financial assistance from fans as he battled health issues over the past few weeks.
The veteran comic actor was said to have been hospitalized for two weeks before his passing.
Mr Ibu rose to prominence in the early 2000s for his comedic roles in Nollywood films such as Mr Ibu in London and Mr Ibu.
Many of his fans and admirers have taken to social media to mourn the comic actor and send their condolences to his family.
