A 32-year-old man, Samuel Shegun, was arrested by detectives from the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Dutse over alleged brutal killing of his mother, Esther Adekanla, at their residence near Awajil Filling Station in Dutse, Jigawa.

Jigawa State Commissioner of Police CP AT Abdullahi made this known at a press briefing on Tuesday.

He said the arrest was made possible through tracking the deceased phone, which linked Shegun to the crime.

He noted that Esther Adekanla, known as Hadiza Nakowa, was reported missing on February 12, prompting neighbors to raise concerns.

He noted that upon investigation, her lifeless body was found in their home with visible cuts on her head and neck, while her 11-year-old house help, Christiana Michael, was discovered injured but alive in a locked store.

The CP pointed out that the victim was promptly attended to by medical professionals but unfortunately succumbed to her injuries.

“On interrogation, the suspect disclosed that, on 12th February, 2024 at about 2200hrs, his mother returned back from where she sells food, and that she started fighting with the young girl, Christiana Michael ‘f’ to the extent that she held a knife.

In his effort to rescue the girl, he dragged her back when they all fell, she cut herself on the neck with the said knife.”

According to the suspect, concerned about the consequences, he attempted to cover up the crime by stealing Esther’s phones, fleeing the scene, and disposing of the phone.

As the investigation continues and the injured house help receives medical treatment Justice Watch News gathered that the community remains shocked by the tragic events that unfolded in the neighborhood.
