Residents of Minna, Niger State’s capital, stopped important roadways on Monday morning to protest the city’s high cost of living.
Women and young people were among the demonstrators heard shouting protest songs, while police officers and other security staff watched the situation.
The demonstrators claimed that the rise in food costs, along with the government’s poor response, drove them to block major roadways to catch the authorities’ attention.

Niger Deputy Governor Yakubu Garba addressed the protesters and stated that the administration understood the suffering and difficulties that families were going through at the moment.
He also added that the government was working towards lowering the cost of living and reducing the effect of the petrol subsidy removal.
