Kano-based Hausa musician, Abdul Kamal, has taken BBC Hausa Service to court for using his soundtrack in their renowned program, “Daga Bakin Mai Ita’,” without obtaining his consent.
Barrister Bashir Ibrahim Umar, counsel for the plaintiff, informed the court that the unauthorized use of Kamal’s soundtrack could detrimentally impact his future career.
He stated, “As an upcoming musician, this will destroy his career as some people may think he (my client) is using the BBC’s track for cheap popularity.”
Umar urged the court to compel the BBC to pay N120 million in damages and requested a restraint on further use of the track until the court reaches a final decision.

In response, BBC’s counsel, Barrister Shakirudden Mosobalage, defended that the sound track was purchased from a company in Abuja.
He requested time to present supporting documents, a plea granted by the court.
Presiding judge Justice N.M. Inusa adjourned the case to December 12, 2023, for further mention.
