Makurdi, the capital city of Benue State, experienced significant flooding on Monday after nearly 12 hours of continuous rainfall.

The heavy downpour, which began as a light shower around 10 pm on Sunday, intensified around 4 am on Monday, persisting until approximately 10 am.

This extended rainfall led to flooding in various areas, including Wurukum, Achusa, and parts of Gboko Road. Among those affected were students of Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, formerly known as the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, who found themselves stranded due to the inaccessible road leading to the university campus.

Mimidoo Gundu, a student union leader at FUAM, expressed her concern and called for swift intervention. She reported, “This morning, water blocked the road that links SRS Junction to Joseph Sarwuan Tarka University, Makurdi, around Antsa and Ichwa respectively. This has been a significant obstacle for staff members and students trying to reach the school, and it is very disheartening.

I urge the federal/state government and the school management to address this problem before it worsens and damages the road.”

Residents of Achusa also faced the consequences of the flooding, with one resident named Tony sharing his distress, saying his house was inundated, and his household items were soaked.

Tony and other residents were comcerned about the potential for even more severe flooding following reports of water release from Ladgo dam in Cameroon.

GOOD EVENING NIGERIA reports that Benue State is among Nigerian states foretold to experience flood because of the Ladgo dam opening, which had started in August.

However, it is unclear whether the Monday flooding in Benue communities is effect of the dam.
