Subsidy: BUK Gives Soft Loan, Procures Bicycle for Staff as Palliative Measures

Bayero University Kano (BUK) has taken steps to alleviate the current challenges faced by Nigerians in the wake of the fuel subsidy removal.

In an official announcement made during the University’s 56th Congregation meeting on Saturday, Vice Chancellor Prof. Sagir Adamu-Abbas unveiled the institution’s palliative measures aimed at providing relief to both staff and students.

According to a statement released on Saturday, the University has allocated millions of Naira to the University Cooperatives Committee for the purchase of food items.

These provisions will be distributed to staff in a non-interest format, with a flexible repayment period of six months.

Additionally, BUK has finalized an arrangement with BUK Microfinance Bank to offer non-interest loans to staff, specifically to assist them in paying for their children’s school fees. Prof. Sagir Adamu-Abbas assured that the University would absorb any interest accrued, thus cushioning the effect of registration fee increments.

The Vice Chancellor emphasized that the soft loan facility would be accessible to staff at any time, with the possibility of revolving loans for those facing financial challenges. This measure aims to provide immediate financial assistance to those in need.

Addressing transportation issues faced by students, Prof. Sagir Adamu-Abbas revealed an agreement with the Kano State government to provide buses that will transport students to and from specified destinations to the university campuses at affordable rates. Once the arrangements are finalized, Kanawa buses will begin serving routes within BUK campuses, easing the burden of commuting for students.

In recognition of the hardships faced by junior staff members due to increased transportation fares, the University is in negotiations to procure bicycles.

This initiative seeks to help the junior workers cope with the rising cost of transportation and to eliminate the need for arduous treks between the Old Campus and New Campus, which spans nearly 10 kilometers.

As an additional palliative measure, BUK has decided to waive eight months of house rent for staff occupying university-owned houses. Those who have already paid rent during this period will receive refunds accordingly.

To further alleviate transportation challenges, the University plans to allocate vehicles to transport staff to and from the campus during specific times. This measure is expected to address various transportation difficulties faced by staff members.
