Olufunmilayo Ogunsanya, a Nigerian doctor practicing in the UK, has been acquitted of sexual harassment allegations made against him by an ex-lover, as decided by the Medical Practitioner Tribunal Service (MPTS) on Thursday.
The case, which gained attention in 2020 when Bolanle Aseyan, a medical doctor and former partner of Mr. Ogunsanya, accused him of sexual harassment and physical violence, including various disturbing acts.
He was accused of acts ranged from inappropriate touching to covering her mouth, squeezing her breasts, and using a fork to harm her.
After a thorough review of the allegations, the tribunal concluded that all claims made against Mr. Ogunsanya were unproven, stating that they were “determined and found but not proved.”
Among the allegations was one questioning Mr. Ogunsanya’s fitness to continue practicing as a doctor.
However, the tribunal dismissed this claim, emphasizing that since the facts were not proven, it followed that his fitness to practice remained unaffected.
In a Twitter post announcing the verdict, Inibehe Effiong, an attorney to Mr Ogunsanya, said: “the vindication of Funmi is a victory for all victims of false accusations of sexual misconduct.”
He added that Ms Aseyan is currently facing both civil and criminal lawsuits in Nigeria for her actions.
“No one should have to go through what Funmi has ensured these past years. False rape allegations should never be trivialised. It is evil and despicable, ” Mr Effiong tweeted.
