The ongoing Senate screening of the final ministerial nominee took an unexpected turn as the session devolved into chaos.
Festus Keyamo, the former Minister of State for Labour, was facing questions when the atmosphere in the Senate chamber became disorderly.
A Senator raised a point of order, criticizing Keyamo for declining an invitation from the House of Representatives during his tenure as Minister.
This remark sparked a tumultuous exchange among Senators, causing disruption for over 10 minutes while Keyamo remained standing.
To restore order, Senate President Godswill Akpabio intervened and reminded the Senators that they should remain silent when the Senate President stands.
As tensions escalated, Akpabio turned to Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele to take control of the situation.
Bamidele initiated two motions: the first was to extend the Senate session beyond the usual 2 pm, and the second was to transition into a closed-door executive session.
Both motions were approved, leading to the suspension of Keyamo’s screening.
The motions were scaled through while the screening of Keyamo was deferred.
Consequently, the Senate proceeded with the closed session to deliberate further on the matter.
