Anonymous Sudan, a pro-Nigerien hacktivist group, recently made an unsuccessful attempt to disrupt MTN Nigeria’s network as a protest against Nigeria’s stance on the coup in the Republic of Niger.
According to a reliable source within the telecommunications company, the hackers made multiple unsuccessful attempts to breach MTN’s network. The hacktivist group, Anonymous Sudan, had previously claimed responsibility for a cyberattack against MTN Nigeria on Wednesday.
The group’s attack was reportedly in response to Nigeria’s proposed military intervention in Niger.
In a statement shared on its Telegram channel, Anonymous Sudan stated, “We claim full responsibility for this attack because of Nigeria’s government actions against Niger. They are attempting to cut power and are willing to participate in the French colonialistic planned invasion of Niger.”

Acknowledging the attempted attack, the source from MTN confirmed to PUNCH the group’s claims but emphasized that their cybersecurity measures prevented any successful intrusion.
The source explained that while there were a couple of minor issues, the substantial firewalls in place effectively thwarted the hacktivist group’s efforts.
The source emphasized MTN’s commitment to continually invest in strengthening its cybersecurity infrastructure and reinforcing its firewalls.
Meanwhile, the National Information Technology Development Agency issued a warning through its Computer Emergency Readiness and Response Team.
The agency identified Anonymous Sudan as a politically and religiously motivated hacktivist group that poses a significant risk to critical information infrastructure. The agency advised financial service providers, telecommunication companies, and relevant government service providers to enhance their cybersecurity readiness.
