In a heartbreaking incident, a fire outbreak at an Islamiya school in Kaura-Namoda Local Government Area of Zamfara State has left at least 17 Almajiri students dead and 16 others injured.
Eyewitnesses revealed that the fire, which broke out late Tuesday night, raged for nearly three hours before being brought under control. Despite efforts to contain the flames, the inferno caused extensive damage and tragic loss of life.
A resident, Abdulrasaq Bello Kaura, shared that the fire started from stored sticks, locally known as kara, which quickly spread to the study hall of Makaranta Mallam Ghali, where about 100 students were gathered for their studies.
“It happened inside their study hall. After evacuating the students, they assumed no one was left inside, but when they returned after the fire, they started seeing hands and legs. They got burnt beyond recognition,” he recounted.
The deceased students were buried on Wednesday in accordance with Islamic rites.
Speaking via telephone, the Chairman of Kaura-Namoda Local Government, Comrade Mannir Muazu Haidara, confirmed the tragic incident, stating that he was on his way to assess the situation and would provide further details later.
