Anxiety As Kano Assembly Move To Recall Emirate Law

Kano State Assembly on Tuesday commended legislative process for the amendment of Emirate Council Law 2019.

The recall of the emirate law followed a motion raised by majority leader of the assembly, Alh. Lawan Hussaini Yan Gurasa during the plenary session of the assembly.

Yan Gurasa, representing Dala state constituency, move the motion for the recall of the law under a matter of urgent public importance interest, seeking the approval of the lawmakers for urgent amendment.

Upon the motion raised before the presiding officer, Rt. Hon. Speaker Jibril Isma’il Falgore, a member representing Dawakin-Kudu state constituency, Shu’aibu Rabiu seconded the motion.

The assembly unanimous adopted the motion for the amendment of the emirate council law and reserved for next legislative process.

Although, the majority leader was silent over the rational behind the motion, the assembly had received series of petitions from various interest groups calling for amendment of the law that led to the balkanization of traditional rulers in the state.

The Emirate Council Law which was amended by former Governor, Abdullahi Umar Ganduje in 2019 broken the history of Kano emirate thereby introduced the establishment of five first emirs in the state.

The Ganduje led amendment led to balkanization of Kano Emirate into five Rano, Karaye, Gaya, Bichi and Kano emirate with subsequent inauguration of first Class Emirs.

The dramatic action of the then Governor apparently led to the dethrone of the 14th Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II and subsequent appointment of Aminu Ado Bayero as 15th emir.

There was tension in the air on whether the amendment will lead to revocation of the four additional emirates established by Ganduje’s administration or not.

There are insinuation on whether the fresh amendment ostensibly being orchestrated by state government was intended to return the former Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as emir of Kano or not.
