Operatives of the Nigeria Police Force have reportedly arrested Joe Ajaero, the National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.
This development occurred as the NLC had declared its intention to commence a total strike in Imo State, beginning on November 1, 2023.
According to Benson Upah, the Head of Information at NLC, Ajaero was taken into custody at the state secretariat of the congress and subsequently transported to an undisclosed location.

Ajaero, during a press briefing on Sunday, accused the Imo State Government of violating the rights of Nigerian workers in the state.
He raised concerns about the alleged neglect of workers’ welfare, citing issues such as unpaid salaries, the labeling of pensioners and workers as ghost beneficiaries, and non-compliance with the national minimum wage.
Ajaero claimed that around 10,000 pensioners and 11,000 workers had been falsely identified as ghost beneficiaries by the state government.
