Reps: Court Affirms Ex-Majority Leader Alhassan Ado Doguwa Winner of Kano Poll

Former House of Representatives Majority Leader, Alhassan Ado Doguwa, was on Monday declared legitimately winner of February 25, Tudun Wada/Doguwa Federal Constituency election.

The court ruled in his favor, dismissing the petition of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) candidate, Salisu Yushau Abdullahi.

Justice L.B. Owolabi, the presiding judge, delivered the judgment on Monday, highlighting that the petitioner had failed to establish his case beyond reasonable doubt.

“The petitioner in whole has failed to make any case capable of truncating the election of Alhassan Ado Doguwa, and as such, he is hereby returned duly elected by a majority of votes,” the judge affirmed.

The court rejected the petitioner’s claims of corrupt practices by Alhassan Doguwa, non-compliance with electoral laws, and insufficient lawful votes to secure victory.

Additionally, the alleged violence during the elections was refuted by all 21 witnesses brought forward by the petitioner.

In a unanimous decision, the court concluded that the evidence provided by the 32 witnesses, including those testifying to over-voting, did not align and lacked credibility.

The presiding judge expressed skepticism regarding how all the petitioner’s witnesses claimed to have reached their respective polling units simultaneously and witnessed over-voting while failing to identify the result sheets.
