Kano Gov’t Denies Plans to Demolish Bridge ‘Built by Deputy Senate President’

The Kano State Government has refuted claims of any intention to demolish a bridge purportedly constructed by the Deputy Senate President, Barau Jibrin, in his Gwarzo Hometown, saying no such bridge built by Barau Jibrin exists in the first place.

Responding to reports suggesting protests by Gwarzo town residents over the alleged planned demolition of the bridge, the Commissioner for Information, Baba Halilu Dantiye, clarified that there was no bridge constructed by the Deputy Senate President that would be subject to demolition.

However, the Information Commissioner, speaking in Kano said what happened was that some people approached the government seeking for the construction of the bridge.

“And government had already mobilized it’s teams of Engineers who surveyed the place and as usual in a professional way of constructing bridges, all necessary engineering jobs are underway while we are awaiting the submission of reports”.

He said, however, some overzealous groups went to the site and commenced some minor handy works on the place, and used that as a propaganda machine to say that Barau Jibrin had constructed the bridge and government is planning to demolish it.

He added that the original bridge, located on the Gwarzo town bypass, was washed away during heavy rainfall three weeks ago, causing flooding in the area.

“Following the flooding, residents said the locals appealed to the government to work on it, “and plans are already underway to reconstruct the bridge only for overzealous groups to start protesting that there was a bridge and we are destroying”.

Baba Halilu Dantiye also noted that even Barau Jibrin himself, when questioned, stated that he had no knowledge of any bridge he had constructed that could be causing friction between him and the government.
