Former Emir of Kano, Sanusi Mohammed, has said that he held talks with the military leaders who orchestrated the recent coup in Niger.
This disclosed this after his visit to President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, during which he briefed Tinubu on his mediation efforts to address the political crisis in the neighboring nation.
Sanusi’s engagement with the coup leaders follows unsuccessful attempts by representatives from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), the African Union, and a high-ranking US diplomat to resolve the crisis.
Emphasizing that the crisis requires more than government intervention, Sanusi stated, “This is the time for public diplomacy, it’s not a matter that we leave to governments.
“All Nigerians, all Nigeriens need to be involved to find a solution that works for Africa, a solution that works for Niger, that works for Nigeria, and a solution that works for humanity.”
He clarified that his peace initiative was driven by personal intent and contacts rather than government direction.

Sanusi also expressed his commitment as a leader to continue his efforts, stating, “No, I was not sent by the government. Government officials were aware I was going, but it was my personal initiative, using my personal contacts to get there and I will continue to do my best. It is my duty as a leader to do that.”
In the midst of this, ECOWAS leaders are gearing up for an extraordinary summit to address the Niger crisis.

The military leaders in Niger have disregarded ECOWAS’ ultimatum to restore democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum or face potential military action.
The summit is scheduled to take place in Abuja, Nigeria, with Nigeria’s President serving as the current chairman of ECOWAS.
