A special delegation from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has arrived in Niger to meet with the leaders of the recent coup.
The delegation was dispatched by the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with a mandate to urgently address the ongoing political impasse in the country.
The delegation is headed by former Nigerian Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar (Rtd), and includes the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, and the President of the ECOWAS Commission, H.E. Omar Alieu Touray.
The action is in accordance with the resolution reached at the end of the extraordinary summit of the ECOWAS held in Abuja last weekend. The summit’s decision called for swift action to resolve the political situation in Niger.
The arrival of the ECOWAS delegation marks a significant step towards addressing the ongoing crisis in the country and seeking a resolution through diplomatic means.
