President Bola Tinubu on Thursday, submitted a list of 28 ministerial nominees to the national assembly, aiming to meet the constitutional 60-day deadline.

The senate president, Godswill Akpabio, while revealing the list said the nominees will undergo screening as part of the selection process for ministerial positions in the federal government.

An analysis conducted by GOOD EVENING NIGERIA revealed that 7, totalling 25% of the nominees are women, while 21 are men.

The analysis also shows that Katsina, Cross River, and Bauchi states have two ministerial nominees each, while the remaining 11 states lack representation in the list of nominees.

The states currently without ministerial nominees are Adamawa, Bayelsa, Gombe, Kano, Kebbi, Kogi, Plateau, Lagos, Osun, Yobe, and Zamfara.

According to section 147(3) of the 1999 constitution, the President is required to appoint at least one Minister from each state, and the appointee must be an indigene of that particular state.

However, as the nominees were being read by the Senate President, the list is not yet exhausted, indicating that President Tinubu will send more nominations.

It is therefore to be expected that President Tinubu will send a supplementary list to the Senate to meet up with necessary constitutional requirements.

GOOD EVENING NIGERIA had earlier reported that the reason for the absence of nominations from Kano is that the APC camp, led by former Governor Ganduje’, is insisting and pressuring President Bola Ahmad Tinubu not to nominate Kwankwaso into the federal cabinet under the APC Government.

A source, who spoke with our reporter, stated that the Gandujiyya camp insists that they would rather lose the ministerial slot than share the cabinet with their main rival, Senator Rabi’u Musa Kwankwaso, who led the downfall of their party in the 2023 elections in Kano.

25% of Tinubu’s ministerial nominees are women

Out of the 28 names submitted for ministerial nominees by President Tinubu, seven are women.

The women nominated for ministerial positions are Hannatu Musawa, Betta Edu, Doris Aniche Uzoka, Nkiru Onyeojiocha, Stella Okotete, Uju Kennedy Ohaneye, and Iman Suleiman Ibrahim.

The representation of women on the ministerial list accounts for 25% of the total nominees,.

Despite the efforts to promote gender equality in the public sector, the proportion of women falls short of the 35 percent Affirmative Action recommended by the National Gender Policy.

In April 2022, the Federal High Court in Abuja issued an order to the federal government, mandating the enforcement of the National Gender Policy. The policy requires that 35 percent of appointments in the public sector be allocated to women.

The court’s decision came after nine civil society organizations filed a suit on August 24, 2020, urging the implementation of the 35 percent Affirmative Action for women’s appointments in public offices.

The current nomination list shows that there is still progress to be made in achieving gender parity in government positions.
