Tinubu Hosts Benin President, Amidst Niger Political Turmoil, Border Reopening Talks

President Bola Tinubu is currently welcoming Patrice Talon, his counterpart from Benin Republic, for a meeting at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

The meeting between the West African leaders gains prominence amidst growing concerns over political upheaval in the neighboring Niger Republic, which shares its northern borders with both nations.

President Tinubu, in his capacity as the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State and Government, has already voiced condemnation of the unfolding developments in Niger.

Reports indicate that soldiers have barricaded President Mohamed Bazoum inside the presidential palace in the capital city, Niamey. The situation in Niger has raised regional apprehensions about the stability of democracy in the area.

“It should be quite clear to all players in the Republic of Niger that the leadership of the ECOWAS Region and all lovers of democracy around the world will not tolerate any situation that incapacitates the democratically-elected government of the country,” Tinubu had said in a statement personally issued by him.

Apart from the situation in Niger, Nigeria is also in the process of fully re-opening its borders with Benin Republic.

GOOD EVENING NIGERIA reports that a delegation from the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), led by the Acting Comptroller General of Customs, Bashir Adewale Adeniyi, has successfully signed a 12-point communique with Benin authorities, signaling the intent to fully reopen the border between both nations.

Both issue may be content of their meeting.
